Members who participate, renew.

Ask associations why members don't renew, and 52% give the same answer: lack of engagement. BelongLayer builds the participation that renews — a private community under your brand, launched in 90 days, proven with one number your board can read.

The renewal math

Silence has a price. Calculate yours.

At 5,000 members × $400 dues, each renewal point is $20,000 — three points, $60,000 a year. Gone, and missing from next year's base too.

If the improvement holds

Year 1Year 2Year 3

At 5,000 members and $400 dues, a 3-point renewal improvement retains about 150 members and $97,200 in first-year value.

How it's calculated
Members retained = total members × improvement points. Dues retained = members retained × average dues. Non-dues value = 50% of dues retained (events, education, sponsorship — conservative). Staff time = half your stitching hours returned, 48 weeks, valued at $30/hr. ROI compares the total to the $20,000 Founding Partner first year. The three-year view assumes the improvement simply holds — no compounding, though in practice retention gains compound. Defaults reflect 2025 MGI benchmarks. Estimates are directional, not a quote.

You're not deciding whether to afford a fix. You're deciding how long to afford the leak.

Who this is for

Built for associations with real member complexity.

  • 1,000–15,000 members
  • Recurring dues
  • Chapters, committees, or special-interest groups
  • Events, education, mentoring, or certification programs
  • Staff responsible for membership, engagement, or community
  • Pressure to prove value between conferences and renewals

Not for associations that want another social feed — or teams expecting software to create community by itself.

Why renewal campaigns arrive too late

Nobody quits in month twelve. They quit quietly in March.

By renewal season the decision is months old — made in a silence none of your nine tools can see.

Associations that keep members aren't better at renewal campaigns. They see the drift in time to act.

What you're actually up against

Your biggest competitor isn't a platform. It's your own patchwork.

Nine tools, each reasonable alone. Together: invisible members and staff paid to stitch seams.

  • Email newsletters
  • AMS portal
  • Facebook groups
  • LinkedIn
  • Slack / Teams
  • Zoom
  • Event platform
  • LMS
  • Shared drives & spreadsheets
  • You can't see who's drifting toward non-renewal
  • Members go passive between conferences
  • New members never meet anyone
  • Chapter energy is invisible
  • Sponsor value is capped by fragmented attention

"Free" tools aren't free. Compare any fix to the fully loaded cost of the mess.

The free-group trap

On Facebook, your members are the product — and the ads they're shown can be your competitors'.

The algorithm decides

who hears from you.

Someone else monetizes

your audience.

Your data stays

behind the glass.

It can all vanish

— and you're not the customer.

Fine place to be discovered. Terrible place to build what members pay dues for.

BelongLayer helps associations turn membership into participation — and participation into renewal.

The part a vendor isn't supposed to say

Most community software dies in an empty room. We refuse to sell it alone.

If you've watched a platform launch to silence and quiet cancellation, your skepticism is earned — keep it. What separates communities that live from communities that die is launch discipline, not features.
